  10.        This chapter lists the changes to 4Dwm since the previous
  11.        release.

  13.           +o Silicon Graphics is happy to announce that the "Desks
  14.             Overview" dispute has been successfully resolved. The
  15.             Desks Overview and 4Dwm no longer check for the Desks
  16.             license.
  17.  
  18.           +o 4Dwm is based on the Motif 1.2.4 version of _m_w_m.  This
  19.             includes some support for internationalization.  See
  20.             the Motif release notes for new features that were
  21.             integrated into 4Dwm from _m_w_m.

  23.           +o 4Dwm can save a session on reboot if the desktop system
  24.             shutdown tools are used, such as the toolchest System-
  25.             >"System Shutdown".

  27.           +o The default values of some resources have been changed.
  28.             Some of these resources are:  clientAutoPlace,
  29.             interactivePlacement, wMenuButtonClick,
  30.             doubleClickTime.  If the doubleClickTime is not
  31.             explicitly set, it should use the value of
  32.             multiClickTime which can be set through the toolchest
  33.             Desktop->Customize->Mouse panel.  Backgrounds are on
  34.             turned on the 4Dwm command line in the desktop
  35.             Xsession.dt file, otherwise backgrounds are off by
  36.             default and can be turned on by setting the
  37.             SG_useBackgrounds resource to True.

  39.           +o "Quit" in Window menu has become "Exit".

  41.           +o The 4Dwm menus have been removed from the overlay
  42.             planes.  We wanted to use more colors than are
  43.             available on all systems there.

  45.           +o 4Dwm expects to run with schemes turned on.  If schemes
  46.             are turned off 4Dwm colors may need to be set
  47.             explicitly, especially colors for the overlay planes.

  49.           +o On some systems, the 4Dwm icons will share the same
  50.             colormap as the desktop.  This is an attempt at further
  51.             reducing colormap flashing.  Also, the reading of the
  52.             IRIS image format icon files has been improved.

  74.           +o Desks functionality has been added to 4Dwm.  Desks
  75.             allows the user to organize windows into related groups
  76.             called ``desks.''  The toolchest entry ``Desktop->Desks
  77.             Overview'' invokes the user interface controls needed
  78.             to use desks easily and effectively.  See the 4Dwm man
  79.             page for more information on desks.

  81.           +o Some additional session management functionality has
  82.             been added to 4Dwm.  In its default configuration, 4Dwm
  83.             will attempt to save command lines for windows that are
  84.             on your display.  Then, when you log in again, 4Dwm
  85.             will attempt to execute these commands.  4Dwm only
  86.             attempts to execute these commands if the -_l_a_u_n_c_h
  87.             option is specified on the 4Dwm command line.  See the
  88.             toolchest Desktop->Customize->Windows control panel, as
  89.             well as the 4Dwm man page, for more information.

  91.           +o Screen background management has been added to 4Dwm.
  92.             It switches the screen backgrounds automatically when
  93.             the user switches desks, and it communicates to the
  94.             file manager when icons are on the background, so the
  95.             file manager can maintain the background. Whether or
  96.             not 4Dwm manages backgrounds is controlled by setting
  97.             the SG_useBackgrounds resource to True or to False.
